How often do people give you advice? And how often have you taken advice just because you don’t want to make every single decision in business yourself? You like to feel like, gosh, there’s a proven path here, and if somebody else walked that path before you and knew the best decisions to make, that would just make you feel less alone in building your business.

I have a good friend who wrote a small piece of sales copy for me once and it went something like this: Okay, so you’re sitting in a tea bar in Nepal at the foot of the Himalayas and you smell the incense in the air and you hear the noise in the marketplace outside those thick wooden doors. You’re there because you’ve always wanted to climb to the top of Mount Everest.

That’s your dream and you’re scouting for somebody to help you get up there. Now you’re approached by two different Sherpa guides who say that they could get you to the top of this mountain. Sherpa 1 opens up this backpack and he offers you a bunch of videos and books and one of them is titled The Secrets of Climbing to the Top of Mount Everest. Then he goes, “Hey, just watch those videos and head out onto the trail and if you don’t make it to the peak, you could always come back and I’ll give you a refund on that whole package.”

The second Sherpa extends his hand and it’s got this yak hyde mitten on it and he tells you, “Hey, the clients at the top are going to be tough. But I’ve made this trip dozens of times and I’ll personally guide you up the mountain every step of the way.” In fact, not only has this guide made the trip several times by himself, but he’s taken climber after climber after climber to the pinnacle of that mountain time and time again.

Which Guide Will You Choose?

He knows all the techniques and resources and shortcuts that it takes so that you could stand proud on the top of that mountain. The tallest mountain on the face of this planet. Now for him, there is no, “If you don’t make it, you’d get a refund.” He won’t stop until you do make it to the top and then take a picture of this big stupid grin on your face standing at the top of that mountain.

But after you hear that, which guide you choose? Obviously it’s Sherpa guide number two, right? That’s a no brainer. So let me ask you this, why would you ever choose the first option? You wouldn’t because you don’t want to leave your life in the hands of somebody who doesn’t have a proven track record. You want someone who’s done it and has helped others just like you to reach the exact goals that you’re dedicated to reaching. 

Hanging on to that Lucky Break

But every day, entrepreneurs take advice from people who’ve either never built a real business or who’ve only built one business and they’re hanging their hat on that one lucky break in their distant past. 

So anyway, this email goes on to say, “But it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact, this year could be your greatest year ever.” Now I’ve built four, eight-figure businesses from nothing. Every year I helped a handful of business people to enjoy true business growth.

How to Succeed in Business and in Life

So here’s how you succeed in business and in life: 80% of the time, learn from the past experiences of others, 20% listen to the opinions of those that you really trust and respect.

You’ll learn so much more from somebody’s experiences. Watching how successful people handle themselves than you ever will from their opinions. The moment you make that shift in how you filter information that’s coming into your life, you’ll transform your ability to make game-changing decisions in your business and in your life.

I promise you, this is how successful people constantly win. It’s why unsuccessful people constantly struggle. And it’s all because of the information that they’re allowing in that affects their thoughts and their decision-making process.

The opposite is also true. When you share anything with others, hold yourself accountable to sharing only experiences. If you think that you’ve got some kind of super-valuable opinion that you want to share but it’s not based on experience, then always disclaim that to them. Say something like, “Hey, I don’t have any real relevant experience with this, but for what it’s worth, I’ve heard that X, Y, Z might work for you.” Because success comes infinitely faster when you find wise counsel. Then you seek experience over an opinion from those that you trust. Never listen to the advice of the masses who constantly try to tell you what you should do when they’re not doing anything noble themselves.
